Why Nelson
Nelson records more sunshine hours than anywhere else in the country, and it uses them well: three national parks are within reach, and the coastline immediately north is the best in the South Island.
Abel Tasman National Park is the headline. It is small, coastal and unusually gentle — golden beaches, clear water and an easy coastal track that can be walked in sections with water taxi transfers, or paddled by kayak with seals for company.
Nelson city itself is a creative centre, with a long-standing arts and craft scene, a Saturday market and a growing food and craft beer reputation. Inland, Nelson Lakes National Park and the Kahurangi limestone country give the region real range.

Nelson FAQs
Yes, particularly in summer. Abel Tasman National Park is one of the country's most enjoyable coastal areas and Nelson is the natural base.
Two to three nights. Two covers the city and a full Abel Tasman day; a third adds Nelson Lakes or Golden Bay.
A combination: water taxi in, walk a coastal section, cruise back. Kayaking is the best option if you want time on the water.
Very. The walking is gentle, the beaches are safe and boat transfers let you choose how far you go.
About two hours by road, and the drive over the Whangamoa Saddle is scenic in its own right.
December to March for swimming and kayaking. The region is sunny year round but the water is only warm in summer.
