Why Greymouth
Where the alps meet the Tasman Sea
Greymouth grew on gold, coal and timber, and it still feels like a working town. What it offers travellers is connection: the TranzAlpine arrives here, and the coast road runs north and south from its doorstep.
The TranzAlpine is the main event — a four-and-a-half-hour crossing from Christchurch through the Waimakariri gorges, over Arthur's Pass and down through beech forest to the coast. It is regularly listed among the world's great train journeys.
Around the town there is more than first appears: Shantytown recreates a gold-rush settlement with a working steam train, Lake Brunner sits in beech forest 40 minutes inland, and the Point Elizabeth Walkway follows the coast to a headland lookout.
