Why Hanmer Springs

A thermal village in the mountains

Hanmer Springs is New Zealand's original alpine spa town. The thermal water has been used since the 1880s, and the village that grew around it remains focused on the same thing: slowing down.

The thermal pools complex is the centre of it — a series of open-air rock and sulphur pools at varying temperatures, set among mature trees, with private pools and spa treatments alongside. Winter is arguably the best time, with steam rising against snow-dusted hills.

The village is surrounded by forest. Conical Hill is a 30-minute climb to a village view, the Woodland Walk loops through Douglas fir and redwood, and beyond that the Molesworth high country, Lewis Pass and the Waiau Gorge offer some of Canterbury's most striking inland scenery.
