Why Punakaiki
Where the rainforest runs into the sea
Punakaiki is barely a village, but it holds one of New Zealand's most photographed natural features and sits inside a national park of limestone gorges and nīkau palm forest.
The Pancake Rocks formed around 30 million years ago from alternating layers of marine sediment, then were lifted, weathered and undercut. At high tide with a westerly swell, the blowholes surge and boom through the stacks.
The rest of Paparoa National Park is quieter and just as good. The Pororari River Track follows an emerald river into a limestone gorge lined with palms, and the Truman Track drops through coastal forest to a beach with a waterfall falling straight onto the sand.

Yes. The Pancake Rocks are a genuine highlight of the West Coast, and the surrounding walks are excellent and short.
How long do you need at Punakaiki?
The Pancake Rocks walkway takes around 20 minutes. A night lets you time it for high tide and add the Truman and Pororari tracks.
When do the blowholes work best?
Around high tide with a westerly swell. Your driver guide can plan the stop around the tide chart.
Is there much accommodation?
A limited amount, and it books out in summer. Greymouth is 40 minutes south if Punakaiki is full.
What is the Paparoa Track?

When is the best time to visit?
