Why Taupō
Lake Taupō fills the caldera of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. That geology is still visible everywhere — in the steam, the rivers and the mountains on the southern horizon.
The town itself is compact and easy, with a swimmable lakefront, good cafés and thermal pools. Within 15 minutes you can be at Huka Falls, where the Waikato River is forced through a narrow rock channel, or standing in the steam fields at Craters of the Moon.
Taupō is also the most comfortable base for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and it sits on the natural line between Auckland, Rotorua and Wellington — which makes it one of the easiest stops to slot into a North Island route.
