Why Napier
An Art Deco city in wine country
Few cities have such a clear identity. After the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake flattened the centre, Napier was rebuilt almost entirely in the style of its moment, and it has kept it.
The result is a compact centre of pastel facades, sunbursts and zigzags, best explored on foot with a guide who can point out the Māori motifs woven through the designs. Marine Parade runs alongside it, with Norfolk pines, gardens and the Pacific.
Just inland is one of New Zealand's great wine regions. Hawke's Bay is the country's oldest, known for Syrah, Chardonnay and Bordeaux blends, with cellar doors set among orchards and the limestone ridge of Te Mata Peak above them.
