Why Tauranga
Tauranga and Mount Maunganui sit either side of one harbour entrance, and between them they offer the most complete beach-town experience in the Bay of Plenty.
Mauao, the extinct cone at the tip of the peninsula, is the centrepiece. The base track takes about 45 minutes at sea level; the summit climb takes around an hour and delivers a view across the whole bay, the harbour and Matakana Island.
Either side of the mount are two completely different waters: the open Pacific surf of Main Beach and the flat, warm harbour side, with saltwater hot pools at the foot of the hill. Add strong cafés, a growing wine and orchard scene inland and it works well as a one- or two-night coastal break.
