Westport is a working town with an unusually dramatic backyard: a wild surf coast to the west, the Buller River to the east and a plateau of abandoned mining history above.
The Cape Foulwind Walkway is the highlight, following clifftops to a New Zealand fur seal colony where pups play in the rock pools through summer and autumn. Tauranga Bay below is a long arc of sand and surf.
