Why Hokitika

Hokitika is the most characterful town on the West Coast: a gold-rush port turned craft centre, where carvers work pounamu from the rivers behind the town.
Hokitika Gorge is the reason most travellers stop. Rock flour ground by glaciers upstream turns the Hokitika River an almost unreal turquoise, crossed by a swingbridge and looped by a short, easy walk.
The town itself rewards a slow afternoon: greenstone and glass studios along Tancred Street, a driftwood-strewn beach with a famous sign and one of the country's best free sunsets, and a glow worm dell that lights up at dusk a few minutes from the main road.
