Why Kaikōura
Mountains, canyon and sperm whales
Just offshore, the seabed drops into the Kaikōura Canyon, where cold and warm currents meet. That upwelling feeds an extraordinary concentration of marine life within a few kilometres of the shore.
Sperm whales are resident year round, and humpbacks, orca and blue whales pass through seasonally. Dusky dolphins travel in pods of hundreds, and New Zealand fur seals haul out on the rocks at Point Kean and along the peninsula.
On land the peninsula walkway is one of the country's best short coastal walks, with the Seaward Kaikōura Range rising behind the town. The name means 'meal of crayfish', and the seafood caravans along the coast road live up to it.
