Why Picton
The gateway to a drowned river valley
The Marlborough Sounds are flooded valleys, which is why the coastline is so intricate: more than a thousand kilometres of it, folded into a small corner of the map.
Picton is the working heart of it. Ferries arrive from Wellington, mail boats leave for remote bays, and water taxis drop walkers at the trailheads of the Queen Charlotte Track. The town is small and pleasant, with a waterfront promenade and a handful of good places to eat.
It is also the doorway to Marlborough wine country. Blenheim and the Wairau Valley are 25 minutes south, making Sauvignon Blanc cellar doors an easy half-day even on a single-night stay.
