Staying here transforms a Fiordland visit. From Te Anau, Milford Sound is about two hours away rather than four from Queenstown, which means an early cruise before the day buses arrive, and time to stop at the Mirror Lakes, Eglinton Valley and Homer Tunnel along the way.
The town itself is unhurried: a lakefront path, a bird sanctuary for takahē, glowworm caves across the water and long evenings with the mountains catching the last light. It is the natural base for walkers on the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn tracks.
