Why Dunedin
Victorian streets and world-class wildlife
Dunedin was built on Otago gold money, and it shows. It is also the only city in the world with a mainland royal albatross colony on its doorstep.
The centre is compact and handsome: the Railway Station with its mosaic floor, the Octagon, a strong public art gallery and a student population that keeps the cafés and music venues busy. Baldwin Street, briefly the world's steepest, is a short drive away.
The Otago Peninsula is the real draw. A narrow, winding harbour road leads to Taiaroa Head, where northern royal albatross nest and little blue penguins come ashore at dusk. Yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and sea lions use the beaches on the ocean side.
