Why Wānaka

Queenstown's quieter, more grounded neighbour

Wānaka has the same alpine scenery as Queenstown with far less of the noise. It suits travellers who want mountains, water and good food without queues and crowds.

The lake dominates. A flat lakefront path runs from the town centre past the famous Wānaka Tree, and the water is clean enough to swim in through summer. Behind the town, Roys Peak climbs to one of the most photographed viewpoints in the country.

Wānaka is also the closest town to Mount Aspiring National Park. The Matukituki Valley road leads to the Rob Roy Glacier track, a half-day walk that ends beneath a hanging glacier — one of the best value alpine experiences in New Zealand.
