Why Paihia
144 islands and the country's founding story
The Bay of Islands is New Zealand's subtropical playground, and it also holds the site where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. Few places combine scenery and national significance so directly.
Paihia is the practical base: the wharf, the operators and the accommodation are all here, and the passenger ferry to Russell takes just 15 minutes. From the wharf, boats head out past sheltered anchorages to the Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett, often with dolphins alongside.
On land, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds offer guided tours, a carved meeting house, the world's largest ceremonial war canoe and a museum that explains the Treaty from both Māori and Crown perspectives. It is the single best cultural-history stop in the North Island.
